Center for History and New Media

George Mason University, Fairfax, VA, USA

Since 1994, the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University has used digital media and computer technology to democratize history—to incorporate multiple voices, reach diverse audiences, and encourage popular participation in presenting and preserving the past. The Center sponsors more than two dozen digital history projects and offers free tools and resources for historians. The Center's work has included websites such as History Matters, World History Matters, and Liberty, Equality, Fraternity: Exploring the French Revolution; explorations of how to create and mine digital archives in sites such as the September 11 Digital Archive and the Echo Project; and software for students, teachers, and scholars, such as the research tool Zotero.
