Research and teaching

These offer academic courses and colloquia, conduct research and publish. Some members hold academic appointments either in or closely associated with humanities computing.

  1. Arbeitsstelle Computerphilologie, Universität Hamburg [X], conducts research in "computer philology" with strong emphasis on narratology, holds seminars and courses in collaboration with other departments of the university and offers a certificate in the subject.
  2. Cultures Anglophones et Technologies de l'Information, Sorbonne (Paris, France) [X], conducts computer-assisted research in the humanities, specifically the history of representation with a focus on urban life; conducts courses and colloquia; publishes proceedings, research results, multimedia products (CD-ROM Georgian Cities, Presses de l'Université de Paris-Sorbonne, 2000); puts online research and learning resources on its website; is project leader of a national consortium for training students in humanities computing skills and search strategies (Campus Numérique 2001, "Réseaux.doc" 2001).
  3. Historisch-Kulturwissenschaftliche Informationsverarbeitung, Universität Köln [X], offers a degree programme providing teaching at all levels from undergraduate courses to PhD supervision; very strong emphasis on computer science. A new degree course offering a diploma in Medieninformatik (computer science for new media) starts winter 2002 / 2003. The HKI is involved in research projects with strong emphasis on software engineering; current projects include the Codices Electronici Ecclesiae Coloniensis and Prometheus, a digital picture archive.
  4. Illinois Center for Computing in Humanities, Arts, and Social Science (I-CHASS), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, US [X], collaborates with disciplines across the humanities, arts, and social sciences to conduct innovative work in computational arts, humanities and social sciences. I-CHASS sees high performance computing as potentially transformative of social scientific inquiry. Campus partners have included Anthropology, Architecture, Art, Art History, Classics, Computer Science, Continuing Education and Outreach, Economics, Education, French, Geography, History, Music, Library and Information Science, Linguistics, Literature (English), Political Science, Religious Studies, Sociology, Spanish, Theatre, and Urban Studies and Planning. Being located at a supercomputing center means that I-CHASS has access to over 250 personnel at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, as well as leading-edge computational resources, both technical and conceptual.
  5. Center for Digital Humanities, University of Debrecen [X], a virtual center established in May 2006 as one of the new centers of the Faculty of Humanities. Its purpose is to bring together teaching staff and researchers of various departments of the Faculty to exchange experience in digital humanities both in teaching and research activities. The main objectives are to a. enhance the professional level of academic teaching using computational methods and b. participate in joint teaching as well as research projects.
